Change Your Clock Change Your Battery

Although smoke alarms are present in 96% of American homes, 19% do not work, mostly because of dead or missing batteries. This means roughly 25 million homes are at risk because of non-working smoke alarms and an additional 4.5 million homes are at risk by not having smoke alarms.

In the U.S., roughly 80% of fire deaths result from fires in homes without working smoke alarms. Half of the home fire deaths resulted from fires in the small percentage of home (five percent) without any smoke alarms

83% of all civilian fire-related deaths are a result of home fires.

Tragically, many people mistakenly believe they'd be awakened by the smell of smoke in time to escape. Clinical experiments have found the sense of smell actually lessens when people are asleep. Therefore, when smoke enters a bedroom, it does not always awaken the individual. In addition, smoke disorients people and dulls their senses, making it less likely other cues, such as cries for help, will awaken them. This is why working home smoke alarms are so important.

What can you do to prevent this?

On November 2, 2008 when you set your clock back to standard time remember to change the batteries in your smoke alarms and carbon monoxide detectors, too!
